Goal! Reunions! Blood! What more could you want in a season 4 finale? I could have used more than an hour of content, but we can't always have what we want. Let's dive right into the action-packed ending to one of the most thoughtful and non-action-packed seasons ofThe living Deaduntil today. Check it out for more thoughts on the season finaleThe original message from Dalton Ross.

The season finale begins in an unexpected place: prison, before everything goes wrong. Fresh from what they believe was their last confrontation with the governor, the prison community is two months into its development. All together. No one has a mysterious flu virus. Life is hopeful for once.

Rick, Maggie and Glen return from a run and greet their families. This means we see Hershel alive and well, unless part of his leg is missing. It's the real "painful eyesore" - I may not miss the prison community much, but I do miss Herschel.

Cut to: It's the gift after prison. Rick's hands are red and shaking. His face is also covered in blood as he sits next to a wrecked truck. What happened? Why is Rick covered in blood? After a season marked by an ambitious manipulation of time, the season finale is no different.

Now it's post-prison, pre-damned Rick present. Still on their way to Terminus, Rick, Michonne, and Carl are running low on supplies, but remain hopeful. As de facto family, they leave their camp to check Rick's trap.

Carl asks Rick and Michonne upon their arrival at Terminus if they are going to tell the others about "everything that happened to them" and everything they've done. Rick replies, "We'll tell them who we are." Carl replies, "Who are we?" Season 4 Theme Alert!

Inside the trap, Rick collects a small rabbit and explains how the trap works. It places the trap in front of a funnel-like path and leads the unsuspecting prey into the trap. What else looks like a path leading to a trap in the second half of this season? uh...

Suddenly a man's voice calls for help from afar. Without hesitation, Carl runs towards the voice. (Damn Carl!) Rick and Michonne follow him. Carl discovers that the screams are coming from a bespectacled man surrounded by Walkers. Carl raises his shotgun to shoot the Walkers - inexplicably wasting any more bullets he has left - but Rick pulls him back. They can't help the Four Eyes - the commotion will only draw the Walkers to them. However, a few walkers from the edge of the horde spot them. Rick, Michonne, and Carl return to the tracks to find more walkers digging for another meal.

As Rick deals a punch to the first Walker in his path, we flash back again, this time to Hershel waking Rick up in jail. She wants his help with something - something she doesn't need his gun for. “It just gets in the way,” Herschel points out.

With his much-needed and used weapon, Rick, Michonne and Carl are on their way again. They find an abandoned truck, as seen in the opening scene, and settle there for the night.

In the dark, Rick and Michonne talk by the fire while Carl sleeps in the truck. About a day outside Terminus, Rick suggests that the community should be strong and have a system for inviting others. Michonne "I wonder if it's all legit." Just then they hear a branch break in the forest. Seeing nothing, they relax and continue their conversation. That is, until Joe puts a gun to Rick's temple. The not-so-cheerful band of robbers have caught the "walking poop girl" who killed Lou, and they're out for blood.

NEXT: Nobody corners Rick

Joe proclaims it's a reckoning, a balancing of the universe on "New Years" - but to me it's more like a bloodthirsty group of men on the brink of torture, rape and murder. Before Joe can finish the New Year's Eve countdown, Daryl the Crook arrives onstage and interrupts.

Fulfilling his evolution into a true honest hero, Daryl tells Joe to let Rick, Michonne and Carl go because they are "good people." Completeheroic offermode, Daryl offers himself in place of the trio. Joe is disappointed - Daryl broke the Rule by lying that his friends were "good people". He must suffer the punishment of liars. Joe sickens two of his men on the newly crowned SirPrice for logic. The lead raider turns his attention to Rick and taunts him. As nonchalant as a murderous, vengeful psychopath can be, Joe jokes, “First we're going to beat Daryl to death. Then we have the girl. Then the boy. Then I'll shoot you. And then we square off."subsequentlyonly Jeff Kober laughs in that eerie, sinister way. Dan the Marauder laughs as he pushes Carl to the ground, creating yet another gruesome image with a child this season.

With his friends and especially his son in danger, Rick goes on the offensive. He nods to Joe and points the gun away from him, shooting close to his ear, but not into it. Joe and Rick argue, but Rick falls to the ground again. Daryl still gets hit. Michonne is still in the crosshairs of Tony's gun. Carl is still obsessed with Dan. (Even the implication that the show could "go there" shocked me more than anything during the season finale.)

Joe takes Rick in his arms and taunts him, "What are you going to do now, boy?" Oh, nothing... except MATURE YOUR ASS WITH MY TEETH. Taking advantage of the distraction of a man biting another man's neck, Michonne points Tony's gun at him and fires. Daryl kills his attackers. Dan pulls a knife at Carl - Rick doesn't budge. He grabs Joe's knife and stabs Dan, Carl's soon-to-be rapist, again. And again. And again. Michonne holds Carl tight as the boy watches and never loses sight of his father.

So that's why Rick is covered in blood.

In the meantime, back to the farmIn the past, Hershel wanted Rick to learn how to be a farmer - tame pigs and horses, grow plants and build a new life for Carl and himself. "He needs his dad to show him the way," Herschel emphasises. "Which side are you going to show him?" Rick showed Carl how to cultivate. He really did. It just didn't take that long. Now she shows him how to pull out the bad veins of men when they threaten you and your people.

Now we cut to fucking Rick - sitting by the truck, still dazed and shaken from the events of the night before. In the truck, Michonne lies awake with Carl in her arms. She brushes his hair to the side and holds him as he looks at him as if he were her own child. Daryl goes outside with Rick and traces his history from the prison fall. He talks about Beth and finally declares, "She's just gone." (Is that his way of saying he wasn't looking for her anymore?) Daryl also explains why he stayed with the robbers, feeling guilty about not knowing the extent of their brutality. Rick assures him not to feel guilty and calls Darylmy brother.

After everything they've been through together, Daryl and Rickisbrothers - they are family. For Rick, family is all that matters. After being tried in blood and gore against the robbers, Rick finally understands the lengths he will go to to ensure his family's safety and survival. Violence and brutality along with compassion and love are part of the Rick Grimes Zombiepocalypse - and for the first time, he has faced both sides.

NEXT: You can checkout whenever you want, but you can never leave

The mixed Grimes/Dixon/Michonne's Last Name family is on their way to Terminus again. Rick finds another sign to the Terminus and decides to continue hiking in the woods to stake out the shrine before entering it. They reached the perimeter of Terminus and scattered to make sure it was safe. Honestly, I didn't really understand their reasoning for the breakup. If they wanted to make sure Terminus was safe, why not cordon off the site for a long time? I think hunger makes you do weird things.

Anyway, Carl goes with Michonne instead of Rick. Thinking Carl fears the violence his father could inflict, Michonne sheds light on her violent past. She explains that at the beginning of the outbreak, her son Andre, Andre's father and her friend Mike, their friend Terry, and they moved to a refugee camp. Despite the growing desperation of their situation, Michonne and her family remained in the camp. One day, returning from a running race, he found that the camp's fences were broken. Andre is gone, probably killed by the Walkers. Mike and Terry were high during the attack and were bitten by the Walkers. Instead of killing them, Michonne turned them. They broke, cutting their hands and mouth. Then she decided to drag them along as a reminder of "what she deserved." Only later did he realize that they acted as a shield for other walkers and that he was "another monster" to them.

"I've been gone for a long time," he says. “But then Andrea brought me back. Your father brought me back. You did." Michonne assures Carl that he needn't fear her or his father for their actions. They're not monsters, even if it seems like they once were. But he's not afraid of them - he's afraid to not be what his father thinks he is."I'm a monster too," Carl confesses.Michonne hugs him as Rick stares at him unseen.Rick has faced the extremes in him, but his next goal is to help Carl the same for himself Season 5 theme, maybe?

Apparently their perimeter check goes well and the team decides to enter Terminus. Before storming the back entrance, Rick buries a bag full of other guns and ammunition "just in case". This isThe living Dead— there is a small chance that there isnormalit's a "just in case" situation that justifies getting this bag back.

With their limited weapons, the team enters Terminus and discover people making more Terminus road signs and an old woman reciting the radio announcement heard during the race. What do you say when you enter a mysterious base you've been traveling to for weeks? Rick stays with the base and delivers an anticlimactic 'Hullo'.

The people of Terminus are surprised but not afraid. A young man sighs and replies, "Well, I bet Albert is on guard outside." (Albert must be Carl of Terminus.) Annoyed but not hostile, the young man welcomes them to Terminus and offers his name, Gareth. Gareth echoes Mary's feelings about how it seems she's been on the road for quite some time. In fact, it follows the exact same process as Mary did in "Us". Gareth has Alex help him check them for weapons and escort them to the Welcome Wagon.

Alex explains that Terminus has been around since almost the beginning of the outbreak - people followed the tracks "almost instinctively" and found it. Do you know what other animals instinctively follow? Funnel-like trails leading to traps.

In the Welcome Wagon, now filled with a few, if few people, they meet Mary, who is grilling "meat". While Mary prepares them a plate of "food", Rick investigates the other residents of the Terminus. He sees a familiar orange backpack, riot gear and poncho. However, it's Alex's silver pocket watch that arouses his suspicions in DEFCON 1. It's identical to the Hershel watch he gave Glenn - certainly not this character Alex. Rick grabs Alex and the pocket watch and points his gun at Alex's temple. The others are alert and (fortunately) don't eat anything from Mary's grill.

NEXT: Terminus is like a mousetrap for cannibals

(Video) The Walking Dead: Final Season RECAP

In the past, Beth takes care of Judith, Patrick plays with Lego (no one of any age should be ashamed to play with Lego), and Carl cleans his gun. I miss the crazy kid who kills Carl. Reminded me of a young Todd fromBreak bad- sociopathic but interesting. Rick enlists his son to accompany him to the growing fields - he doesn't need his gun there as "it just gets in the way".

In the present, Carl absolutely needs his gun. In a confrontation with the well-armed citizens of Terminus, Rick holds Alex hostage and demands to know how he got the watch. Alex, nervous, tells a nearby sniper to stop, saying he got it from a dead man. Gareth reappears with more plausible (false) explanations for possession of the equipment and poncho.

He asks Rick what he wants. But when he doesn't get a straight answer right away, Gareth signals to the sniper, who skillfully shoots Alex in the head. The remaining residents of Terminus scatter and hide as Rick, Michonne, Daryl and Carl try to escape. More snipers shoot at them and miss - on purpose. They argue with the group to take route 'A', as other residents of the terminal block take any other exit outside 'A'. Like an absurd game on his partmuizeval, route "A" includes a storage garage, a yard that has already seen intense gunfire (from a real fight or another corral?), a pile of human bones and torn plastic sheeting, cries for help from shipping containers, and a room full of candles, souvenirs, names written on the floor and the phrases "NEVER AGAIN", "NEVER TRUST" and "WE FIRST ALWAYS" painted on the walls. Their route eventually leads to another container/train car, labeled "A". Surrounded by armed citizens of Terminus, the group reluctantly retreats and lays down their weapons.

Gareth orders Rick, Daryl, Michonne and Carl - technically Ringleader, Archer, Samurai and Kid - to the apartment. Inside they are greeted by some familiar faces - they are Glenn, Maggie, Sasha and Bob along with Tara, Abraham, Rosita and Eugene. Most of the gang is back together!

Cornered and trapped, Rick is at his most optimistic. Flashback to the good times of starting the farmland in Prison, Rick focuses not on what he lost, but on what he got: his family. Excited, Rick claims, "They're going to feel really stupid when they find out." "Guess?" Abraham answers.

The leader replies, "They're calling the wrong people." Gareth and the people of Terminus better watch out.Wait for them to get a loadfrom Rick Grimes and his family - even cannibals can't beat/eat them all. Towards the end of Season 4, it starts off as Donkey Kong.

Hiker of the week:The walkers were not at the forefront of this season finale, which focused more on the horrors of humans than the horrors of zombies. Still, the horde of Walkers surrounding the hapless bespectacled man is both terrifying and frustrating. What makes such a situation even worse is the anger I would have at myself for letting it happen, in addition to the fear of certain death.

Questions to consider:

Now that we've met Terminus and Gareth, what's the story behind Terminus? How was it created and maintained? What are the rules of Terminus?

Who is Gareth? Why is a young man the leader? Who is Mary? Is she related to Gareth?

What's up with the creepy candle room with the names carved into the floor? Do the names mean missing members, meals, or both?

Rick may be ready to forget about the Rick-Roll Terminus, but how can he do that?

How will the new team work together? How do Rick, Daryl, Michonne and Carl deal with Abraham, Rosita and Eugene? Oh yes, and Tara.

Are Gareth and the Terminus gang responsible for Beth's kidnapping? Did they eat her? Was it part of a completely separate story that will be explored next season? Or is it not investigated at all? "Just left;"

Where are Carol, Tyreese and Judith? I still have a feeling that the smoke they saw was not coming from Daryl and Beth's cabin, but from Terminus itself. They may be up in flames by the time they get to Terminus. Or is this just wishful thinking?

What do you want to happen in season 5? Will the conflict at Terminus last all season? Does season 5 include a trip to Washington D.C.?

And how do you survive the wait? (For me,Game of ThronesCouldn't have started a better Sunday.)

Good luck this summerWalking deadHeads! May many marathons accompany you to the celebration of Season 5.
